Аннотация

OBJECTIVE

Iodide mumps, a rare form of sialadenitis, is thought to result from iodide accumulation in the salivary glands, leading to transient ductal obstruction and inflammatory swelling. This report emphasizes the potential risk of iodide mumps induced by facial direct current iodine ion introduction therapy, with the aim of raising awareness among clinicians, reducing misdiagnosis, and ensuring timely intervention.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 61-year-old man with left-sided peripheral facial paralysis, type 2 diabetes, and necrotizing lymphadenitis developed bilateral earlobe swelling, pain, and fever during the fourth session of facial direct current iodide iontophoresis, after three uneventful treatments. Routine blood and organ function tests were normal, and no allergic history was reported. We present a unique case of iodide mumps that occurred in a patient with acute facial nerve palsy and co-existing necrotizing lymphadenitis, undergoing facial direct current iodine ion introduction therapy. The patient's medical history, clinical presentation, and diagnostic assessments are described in detail.

RESULTS

Following the cessation of iodide ion direct current import therapy and appropriate symptomatic treatment, the patient's symptoms gradually improved, and during subsequent follow-up appointments, there were no further instances of parotid gland inflammation or enlargement.

CONCLUSION

Adverse reactions, such as iodide mumps, may occur following facial iodine ion import therapy. While such reactions have been predominantly reported in association with intravenous contrast administration, the present case illustrates that similar pathophysiological mechanisms can be triggered by iodide iontophoresis, even in patients without a documented history of iodine allergy.
