A new standard framework for dermal exposure assessment.

Dermal exposure assessment examines the interaction between chemical contaminants and the skin, representing a critical yet historically underexplored pathway in occupational hygiene. A milestone in the field is the development of a multicompartment conceptual model, enabling systematic evaluation of contaminant transport and forming the basis for dermal exposure measurement methods and tools for modeling and control banding. Although no legally binding dermal limit values currently exist, risk assessment relies on reference values such as derived no-effect levels, threshold limit value-surface limits, and acceptable exposure levels. In a joint effort, the International and European standards working groups ISO/TC146/SC2/WG8 and CEN/TC 137/WG6 have developed a framework that provides structured guidance for qualitative and quantitative assessment of dermal exposure to chemical substances at the workplace. This short communication outlines the essential steps of the framework, presents important recommendations, and provides an overview of the new standard. The standard and its accompanying annexes offer detailed guidance for occupational hygienists, exposure scientists, and health and safety professionals.
