PURPOSE: To compare actual and predicted frequency response of reconstruction algorithms applied to anatomic and phase-contrast velocity cine images.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Anatomic and phase-contrast velocity segmented cine gradient echo images were collected from a stationary, doped-agarose phantom, using non-phase-contrast cine and phase-contrast cine with one to three directional encodings, one to 16 views per segment, and nearest-neighbor or linear interpolation. Temporal power spectra from object pixels were fit to linear transfer function models; nearest-neighbor interpolation by a sinc function and linear interpolation by a sinc(2) function.

RESULTS: Simple linear transfer function models predicted >98% of the observed power spectral variation. Finite word effects produced small systematic differences at high temporal frequency.

CONCLUSION: Temporal power spectra of cine images collected from stationary objects completely characterizes low pass filtration effects of interpolation.
