OBJECTIVE: Assess work-related stress and depressive symptoms among certified organic crop producers in the US Southwest.
METHODS: Cross-sectional survey design with certified organic crop producers listed in the Organic Integrity Database using an electronic and paper version of the Organic Farmer Safety, Health, and Life Questionnaire. Analyses included descriptive statistics and multiple linear regressions to examine predictors of depressive symptoms and overall mental health.
RESULTS: More than half of respondents reported moderate or high work-related stress. Depressive symptom score was low (mean = 0.75, standard deviation = 0.96); self-rated mental health was good (mean = 3.8, standard deviation = 0.9). Years of experience was negatively associated with depressive symptoms, chronic conditions, and stress; older age was positively associated with better mental health.
CONCLUSIONS: Policies and interventions should address administrative burdens, economics, and overall well-being.
