From kidneys to cognition: A novel perspective on Parkinson's Pathogenesis.
Аннотация
Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders, traditionally viewed as a condition limited to the brain. However, emerging evidence suggests that it may also be influenced by systemic factors, including kidney health. In this context, the article "From Kidneys to Cognition: A Novel Perspective on Parkinson's Pathogenesis" provides valuable insights into how renal function could shape the course of PD, particularly with respect to cognitive decline. Kidney function, especially estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), remains an under-recognized but potentially important marker for predicting disease progression. Reduced renal function has been linked with abnormal brain changes and faster decline in memory and thinking abilities. Since tests such as serum creatinine and cystatin C are simple, affordable, and widely available, they may serve as practical tools for early detection and monitoring of PD-related cognitive problems. Importantly, kidney dysfunction contributes to inflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired protein clearance, all of which are processes involved in the development of PD. This broadens our understanding of PD as a systemic disorder rather than solely a neurological one. Future studies should investigate whether improving kidney health could help slow PD progression and create new opportunities for treatment.
