Oral Health Status and Awareness among Pregnant Women: A Cross-Sectional Study in Meerut, India.
Аннотация
BACKGROUND
Pregnancy can influence oral health due to hormonal fluctuations, increasing the risk of gingivitis, periodontitis, and dental caries. Despite recommendations for dental care during pregnancy, there remains limited awareness and utilization of dental services among pregnant women.
AIM: To assess the oral health status and evaluate the knowledge and attitude of pregnant women regarding oral hygiene.
METHODS
A cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 pregnant women aged 18-40 years attending hospitals in Meerut, India. A structured questionnaire (in Hindi and English) assessed knowledge and attitude, and clinical examinations were performed using the WHO Performa 1997. Statistical analysis including Chi-square tests was performed.
RESULTS
74% of women experienced gingival swelling, and 63.3% noticed color changes in their gums. Only 50.7% had visited a dentist during pregnancy. 92.7% did not observe changes in tooth anatomy. Awareness regarding trimester-appropriate dental care was low (13.3%). A significant association was found between knowledge level and oral hygiene practices (P < 0.001).
CONCLUSION
Pregnant women in Meerut exhibit poor awareness and suboptimal oral health. Integrating dental screening into antenatal care is necessary to improve outcomes.
