Аннотация

Forensic psychological practice occurs at the interface between the criminal justice and mental health systems, creating ethical tensions described comprehensively in theoretical literature. However, little is known about the experiences of psychologists in navigating their roles. This qualitative study aimed to explore psychologists' experiences of ethical tensions working with people who have offended. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 psychologists practising in Aotearoa New Zealand. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results highlighted that considerations of risk impacted on many areas of forensic practice, requiring psychologists to: classify clients into risk and diagnostic categories; focus less on therapeutic treatment and formulation and more on reporting; provide treatment predominantly on the basis of 'risk factors'; compromise the therapeutic relationship; use clinical skills to meet the security demands of the criminal justice context; and compromise professional integrity.
