Menopausal problems are associated with reduced quality of life (QOL), at least among women consulting for such problems. Oestrogen treatment alleviates the symptoms and also has a beneficial effect on QOL in terms of increased well-being, and improved sleep and sexual relations. In the choice of treatment, not only should such short-term goals as amelioration of symptoms and improved QOL be taken into consideration, but also preventive treatment effects such as beneficial effects on osteoporosis, cardioprotection, joint problems and cognitive function, as well as side effects and other undesired effects.
