AIM: To evaluate the antifungal activity of Triple Antibiotic Paste (TAP) with Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) against Candida albicans.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disk diffusion test: Thirty Kirby-Bauer disks were soaked in: Group 1-TAP (ciprofloxacin, minocycline, and metronidazole in saline); Group 2-TAP + EGCG + saline; Group 3-EGCG + saline; Group 4-Fluconazole. Disks were dried, placed in a C.albicans suspension, and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. Zones of inhibition were measured.
SIMULATED DENTINE STUDY: Forty single-rooted teeth were decoronated to 12 mm, cleaned and shaped with ProTaper files, and irrigated with saline. Canals were inoculated with C.albicans, treated with medicaments after two days, and incubated for three days. After saline irrigation, sterile absorbent points were placed in Sabouraud Dextrose Agar for 48-hour incubation at 37°C. Colony-forming units (CFUs) were counted.
RESULTS: Fluconazole produced the largest zones of inhibition, significantly larger than EGCG, EGCG + Fluconazole, and TAP + EGCG (P < 0.001).
CONCLUSION: C.albicans is susceptible to EGCG, with Fluconazole exhibiting the greatest antifungal activity.
