INTRODUCTION: As social media becomes embedded in urban life, digital urban memory narratives serve as an important channel through which internal migrants encounter local culture and life. This study examines the statistical associations among perceived social media urban memory narratives, narrative transportation, place attachment, urban identity, and life satisfaction in Dongguan, China. In this study, these narratives refer to story-based digital content connecting urban history and labor experiences with migrants' everyday lives, rather than general city branding or news exposure, or promotional city-image communication.

METHODS: An online survey yielded 890 valid responses from internal migrants. Data were analyzed using hierarchical regression, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), Bootstrap mediation (5,000 resamples), and multi-group comparison based on length of residence.

RESULTS: Core scales demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (α = 0.813-0.906; CR = 0.870-0.920). The seven-factor measurement model showed an acceptable fit, χ2/df = 2.85, CFI = 0.892, RMSEA = 0.068. Perceived urban memory narratives and narrative transportation were positively associated with place attachment. Both place attachment and urban identity were positively associated with life satisfaction. Furthermore, place attachment mediated the association between perceived narratives and life satisfaction, explaining 29.6% of the total association. Length of residence, however, did not moderate relationships.

DISCUSSION: These findings highlight that story-based digital narratives provide a vital symbolic and emotional context for understanding migrants' psychological and spatial integration. Future longitudinal research is needed to clarify the temporal ordering and causal pathways of these digital emotional processes.
