Аннотация

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Bryonia laciniosa is traditionally used in Ayurveda to treat various disorders, including diabetes and inflammation. It is also used as an aphrodisiac agent. Its potential to treat diabetes mellitus-associated reproductive dysfunction is still unexplored.

AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to investigate the protective effect of Bryonia laciniosa seeds in streptozotocin-induced diabetic male rats.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Diabetic male rats were treated with 2 different doses of ethanolic extract of B. laciniosa for 28 days. GC-MS analysis was conducted to identify the phytochemical constituents present in the extract. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to evaluate the interaction and binding efficiency of the identified phytocompounds with target proteins, thereby assessing the therapeutic potential of the plant.

RESULTS: Biochemical analysis revealed that B. laciniosa significantly decreased the fasting blood glucose and lipid profile. It has also ameliorated the sperm parameters and decreased antioxidant activity in the testis. Serum testosterone level significantly increases in diabetic rats after treatment with the extract. It also prevents histological damage in the organs of diabetic rats. TNF-A, COX-2 and IL-6 level significantly decreases after treatment. GC-MS analysis of the plant revealed that there are 47 compounds in the extract and their molecular dynamics analysis revealed that its phytochemicals have a substantial affinity to treat diabetes-associated reproductive dysfunction in males.

CONCLUSION: Bryonia laciniosa demonstrates significant potential in enhancing reproductive function, while concurrently ameliorating fasting blood glucose levels and modulating lipid profiles in diabetic rats.
