In a recent issue of Cell, Spiga et al.1 show that enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis constructs a low-oxygen intestinal niche to fuel pathogen growth through aerobic respiration, promoting tumorigenesis and challenging the view that oxygen is strictly detrimental to obligate anaerobes.
