Аннотация

Objectives. To examine chronic disease-related behavioral risk factors, social needs, and health conditions among non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people. Methods. We analyzed 2011 to 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data among non-Hispanic AI/AN respondents. We calculated weighted prevalence estimates and 95% confidence intervals. Results are stratified by sex (other than health-related social needs owing to small sample sizes) and geographic region. Results. The prevalence of several chronic disease-related risk factors, social needs, and conditions was high among non-Hispanic AI/AN people, including current cigarette smoking (women: 26.9%; men: 30.1%), overweight or obesity (women: 67.8%; men: 73.4%), history of depressive disorder diagnosis (women: 30.0%; men: 19.4%), experience of food insecurity always or usually (10.4%) or sometimes (15.6%), and housing insecurity (20.0%). Differences existed by geographic region; for example, the prevalence of ever being diagnosed with cancer was higher in the Pacific Coast region (women: 11.4%; men: 8.1%) than in the Southwest (women: 5.1%; men: 3.5%). Conclusions. The findings from this study can be used to inform multilevel interventions in non-Hispanic AI/AN communities. Interventions might consider including strategies that address individual risk factors and health-related social needs.
