Аннотация

BACKGROUND: Quantum dots (QDs) are nanoscale semiconductor particles with unique optical properties, including high photostability, broad excitation spectra, and narrow emission spectra. These attributes make QDs promising candidates for advanced imaging techniques in the detection of oral diseases. Early and accurate detection of oral pathologies, such as oral cancer and periodontal diseases, is critical for effective management and treatment outcomes.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, QDs conjugated with disease-specific antibodies were used to enhance the imaging of oral tissues. A total of 50 oral biopsy samples were analyzed, with 25 samples serving as controls and 25 samples displaying confirmed pathological conditions. Samples were incubated with QD conjugates and imaged using fluorescence microscopy. Signal intensity and target specificity were evaluated using image analysis software. Arbitrary fluorescence intensity values were measured to quantify imaging efficiency.

RESULTS: The fluorescence intensity values for pathological tissues labeled with QDs showed a mean of 120 ± 10 arbitrary units (AUs), significantly higher compared to 50 ± 5 AU in control tissues. The use of QDs demonstrated enhanced sensitivity in detecting pathological changes, with a specificity of 95% and sensitivity of 90% in distinguishing diseased from healthy tissues. Additionally, the photostability of QDs ensured consistent imaging results over prolonged observation times.

CONCLUSION: Quantum dot imaging offers a novel, highly sensitive approach to the detection of oral diseases. The enhanced fluorescence intensity and disease specificity highlight its potential as a diagnostic tool. Further research and clinical trials are needed to establish the clinical applicability and safety of QDs in routine oral diagnostics.
