OBJECTIVE

To characterize treatment experiences, compliance with dosing frequency, and adherence to treatment regimen, and to assess factors associated with adherence and compliance among patients with obesity or overweight (PwO) receiving semaglutide 2.4 mg for weight management.

METHODS

This retrospective analysis used cross-sectional survey data from the Adelphi Real World Obesity US Disease Specific Programme. Demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment experiences, and adherence/compliance from both patients' and physicians' perspectives were collected. Physician-reported compliance was defined as consistency between dosing instructions and the actual dosing frequency. Physician-reported adherence was defined as consistency between the physicians's instructions and actual medication use. Patient-reported adherence was measured by the Adelphi Adherence Questionnaire (ADAQ). Logistic regressions explored factors related to adherence and compliance.

RESULTS

Among 272 PwO receiving semaglutide 2.4 mg, physicians reported 76% of PwO (n = 188/246) as fully compliant (received ≥80% of prescribed dose) and 61% (n = 153/251) as fully adherent. Mean (SD) ADAQ was 0.34 (0.53) among respondents (n = 90). Physicians perceived current treatment as successful for most PwO (74.8%, n = 196/262) and most PwO (89.6%, n = 86) indicated they would recommend their current medication to others. Factors associated with compliance included motivation to lose weight, insurance coverage, type 2 diabetes status, and current/ex-smoker status. Factors associated with adherence included motivation to lose weight, age, and number of obesity-related complications.

CONCLUSION

Physicians and PwO receiving semaglutide 2.4 mg reported high satisfaction and high compliance/adherence to their weight management treatment. The improved understanding of real-world influences on treatment compliance and adherence may further optimize obesity and overweight management strategies in clinical practice.
