OBJECTIVE: To evaluate olfactory identification performance in patients with acute Bell’s palsy (BP) and investigate the impact of demographic and lifestyle confounders. METHODS: Fifty patients with BP and 50 healthy volunteers were included. Olfactory function was assessed using the 16-item Sniffin’ Sticks Identification Test. RESULTS: The mean identification score was higher in the BP group (14.34 ± 2.20) than in controls (13.82 ± 1.61, P = 0.019), despite the BP group being significantly older (P = 0.0005). However, clinical categorization showed that hyposmia was more prevalent in the older BP group (10%) than in the younger controls (4%), though this was not statistically significant (P = 0.439). The control group had significantly higher rates of smoking and alcohol consumption (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Acute BP does not appear to cause clinically overt olfactory identification deficits. The unexpected higher mean scores in patients likely reflect the high prevalence of lifestyle confounders in the control group.
