Аннотация

BACKGROUND: The status of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) in breast cancer plays a pivotal role in shaping surgical strategies and prognostic outcomes. By using a bibliometric tool, this article seeks to evaluate fluorescence imaging of SLN implications for surgical applications in breast cancer, current hotspots, and research trends.

METHODS: Articles with research on fluorescent contrast agents for imaging metastatic SLNs in breast cancer were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). We used the bibliometric method to analyze journals, countries/regions, institutions, authors, research hotspots, and trends. We plotted the reference co-citation network and used keywords to analyze the research hotspots and trends.

RESULTS: A total of 587 publications related to the field were identified over the past 25 years. The number of publications steadily in development every year. Further analysis indicated that 587 articles were contributed by 53 countries/regions, 74 institutions, and 201 authors. China leads in the number of publications, totaling 148, while the United States exhibits the highest citation count at 80.6 and centrality at 0.36. Leiden University emerges as the principal research institution, contributing 23 publications. The research emphasis has swiftly transitioned from initial studies on blue dyes to advancements in near-infrared fluorescence, exemplified by indocyanine green (ICG), and is progressively advancing towards cutting-edge developments in nanoprobes.

CONCLUSIONS: This bibliometric analysis elucidates the evolving trends in SLN fluorescence imaging for breast cancer, indicating a transition from the use of blue dyes to ICG, nanoprobes, and the implementation of multicenter trials as prospective areas of advancement.
