BACKGROUND: Meniere's disease is a chronic inner ear disorder characterized by endolymphatic hydrops, episodic vertigo, tinnitus, fluctuating hearing loss, and auditory fullness. It is associated with a range of risk factors and comorbid conditions, including stress and gastrointestinal symptoms. Yoga and naturopathy are effective in treating psychosomatic diseases. The objective of the study was to find the efficacy of yoga and naturopathy in the management various inflammatory conditions and improving quality of life.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 43-year-old female came to our in patient department with a history of pangastritis with gastrointestinal bleeding and associated with Meniere's disease. Her symptoms included tinnitus, vertigo, and nausea, which had persisted for years. She had been on allopathic medications but experienced a relapse of tinnitus and other symptoms. The patient underwent a 10-day residential program incorporating yoga therapy, hydrotherapy, mud therapy, acupuncture, auriculotherapy, and a raw plant-based diet.
RESULTS: Electrogastrography (EGG), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Short Form Health Survey-12 (SF-12), Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), and Tinnitus Reaction Questionnaire (TRQ) were assessed before and after the intervention. Result showed an increase in EGG gastric slow waves post 10-day residential intervention and an increase in physical health component of SF-12 and a reduction in PSS, PHQ-9, THI, and TRQ scores after 2 month follow up post residential intervention.
CONCLUSION: Yoga and naturopathy was effective in improving gastric motility and quality of life and in reducing stress, depression and tinnitus symptom severity in a patient with pangastritis associated with unilateral Menieres disease.
