INTRODUCTION: The liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, is considered one of the principal issues affecting the health and productivity of the UK sheep population. Diagnostic testing is advised to ensure appropriate use of treatment. A new lateral flow test to detect antibodies to liver fluke has recently been developed for use by farmers. Point of care rapid diagnostic tests are rare in agriculture so this represents a novel innovation in this sector.

METHODS: Prototype test kits and accompanying guidance were taken to six farms for initial usability evaluation, before commercial launch of the test onto the UK market. Observed errors and problems were categorised by frequency, severity and persistence.

RESULTS: The main issues related to blood collection using a lancet and blood collection cup, and a lack of precision in the volume of blood sample collected. These two issues caused frustration to participants and affected the validity of the lateral flow test results, although verbal instruction enabled participants to complete subsequent tests without major errors. Consequently, the kit and instructions were refined, and the newly released commercially available kit was evaluated at a further five farms.

CONCLUSION: While some problems were successfully mitigated by the changes, several major errors remained and training and support is advisable before first use of the kit.
