Аннотация

BACKGROUND: Inconsistencies in pediatric nursing documentation compromise patient safety and limit the profession's ability to demonstrate its clinical contributions. Standardized nursing language (SNL), encompassing NANDA International (NANDA-I) nursing diagnoses, Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC), and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC), provides a structured framework to improve documentation quality. However, inadequate nurse education in SNL remains a significant barrier to its effective implementation, particularly in pediatric care settings.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effect of a structured SNL education program on the quality of nursing documentation among pediatric nurses in Beni-Suef City, Egypt.

METHODS: A quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test control group design was employed. A purposive sample of 104 pediatric nurses (experimental: n = 52; control: n = 52) was recruited from three inpatient pediatric units. Documentation quality was assessed using two validated instruments: the Quality of Diagnoses, Interventions, and Outcomes (Q-DIO) tool and the D-Catch instrument. The experimental group received an 11-session SNL education program; the control group continued routine practice.

RESULTS: The SNL education program produced statistically significant improvements across all documentation domains in the experimental group (p < .001). Post-intervention, the experimental group's mean Total Q-DIO score increased from 2.95 to 10.67 and the D-Catch score from 1.83 to 3.59, substantially exceeding the control group's gains (3.94 and 2.14, respectively). Sociodemographic variables did not significantly predict documentation quality.

CONCLUSIONS: An SNL education program significantly enhances pediatric nursing documentation quality. Targeted SNL training is recommended as a priority professional development strategy in pediatric care settings.

IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE: Structured SNL education should be embedded as a priority, competency-based element of pediatric nursing professional development and curricula, with NANDA-I, NIC, and NOC integrated into standardized documentation templates and electronic health records to strengthen diagnostic reasoning, care continuity, and nursing's visibility within pediatric care settings.
