Аннотация
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a multisystem haemoglobinopathy characterised by recurrent vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs). Although central nervous system complications are well recognised, trigeminal and mental nerve neuropathies are rare and may present as numb chin syndrome, mimicking odontogenic or malignant disease. We report three patients with SCD who developed acute unilateral numbness of the lower lip and chin during VOCs. All underwent comprehensive clinical, dental, haematological, and radiological assessment, excluding odontogenic infection, trauma, malignancy, and intracranial pathology. Sensory recovery ranged from complete resolution within weeks to persistent but improving deficits over several months. Recognition of this uncommon complication is important for dentists, oral surgeons, oral medicine clinicians, and orofacial pain specialists to prevent unnecessary intervention, facilitate appropriate multidisciplinary management, and ensure follow-up. Further prospective studies are needed to clarify its incidence, prognosis, and optimal management.
