[Linguistic adaptation of the survey to Catalan language «Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture 2.0»: CatHSOPS 2.0].

INTRODUCTION AND

OBJECTIVES

Assessing safety culture is critical to improving patient safety. There are multiple instruments. It was agreed to use the SOPS® hospital Survey 2.0 from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The aim of this study was to perform a linguistic adaptation into Catalan, because in our context it is a co-official language and for many professionals of primary use.

MATERIAL AND

METHODS

A translation was carried out by two bilingual professionals, native Catalan and Spanish speakers. Two other bilingual professionals reviewed and reached a consensus. Subsequently, an expert in linguistic adaptations, whose native language is English, performed a translation from the Catalan version into English and assessed the semantic equivalence between this translation and the original version, classifying the items in: A, when they were totally equivalent; B, when they presented minor differences caused by grammatical problems or cultural context, and C, for those with content differences. The semantic equivalence between the Catalan and Spanish versions was also assessed, rating terms/phrases on a scale of 0 to 10 (from not equivalent to fully equivalent).

RESULTS

After translating the Catalan version to English language, it was necessary to adapt some terms, resulting in the final Catalan version. Furthermore, there was a high degree of consensus among the evaluators regarding the semantic equivalence of the Catalan and Spanish versions.

CONCLUSIONS

A Catalan version was made publicly available and hosted in the BiblioPro repository.
