Аннотация

The literature on situational frustrations, need deprivations, and behavioral compensations spans numerous research areas, such as the literature on social exclusion, intergroup frustrations, goal obstruction, and economic hardship, just to name a few. Here, we integrate this literature (2,883 effects from 884 samples; total N = 621,425). Samples were predominantly drawn from Western contexts (87.56%), with more limited representation from non-Western contexts. Meta-analytic structural equation modeling supports the basic model where situational frustrations link to need deprivation and subsequently compensation. Moderator analyses using random-effects models support a purposeful compensation lens showing that individuals are strategic and purposeful in matching their behavioral compensation to the strength of the frustration (i.e., they will not overreact) and are more likely to compensate within the same domain and toward the target that caused their frustration. Still, people sometimes compensate at a different level of the frustration and focus on a different need than the need/level that was frustrated. By emphasizing the interplay between tactical adjustments (e.g., switching needs or levels) and strategic alignment (e.g., preserving the goal and domain), we highlight the complex but purposeful nature of compensatory behaviors. We discuss the need for future integration and extension of the database and provide means to do so. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved).
