Аннотация

This essay contributes to the medical humanities by using Bruce Springsteen's 1982 song 'Mansion on the Hill' from his album Nebraska to interrogate the clinical aetiology of the 'paternal void' and generational emotional inheritance. Grounded in rigorous psychoanalytical scholarship, the analysis synthesises the relational theories of D W Winnicott and more contemporary advances by Jessica Benjamin, Christopher Bollas and André Green to decode the song's architectural and narrative metaphors. The distant, hardened steel gates of the mansion represent the emotional distance of the father rather than the typical socioeconomic framing of the song. This is used to demonstrate how the child narrator of the song must create a Winnicottian 'False Self' to survive in a failed emotional environment. The mansion is further conceptualised as a 'conservative object' and a monument of 'normotic' architecture, representing the father's defensive psychic boundary and profound emotional decathexis. Finally, through Benjamin's intersubjective lens, the essay examines how the silent father-son car ride traps the dyad in a coercive state of complementary 'twoness', precipitating a collapse of mutual recognition and further fostering the child's compliant 'False Self'.The manuscript demonstrates how the literary and performing arts serve as a vital 'facilitating environment' for processing Bollas' 'unthought known', illustrating how artistic sublimation transforms isolated relational deprivation into a shared space of cultural and clinical understanding, creating a safe environment in which to explore inter-relational theories.
