Applicability of the indicators from Nursing Outcomes Classification in the evaluation of pressure injuries: A longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the applicability of the outcomes and indicators of Tissue integrity: skin and mucous (1101) and Wound healing: second intention (1103), of the Nursing Outcomes Classification/NOC, in adult patients hospitalized with the Nursing Diagnosis Adult pressure injury.

METHOD: Prospective longitudinal study conducted in a Brazilian hospital between 2018-2020. The nursing process that is digitalized in the institution and the protocol for prevention and treatment of Pressure Injury were taken as a basis. The sample calculation was performed based on the improvement in the NOC score. The non-probability sample size was 57 adult patients with Pressure Injury. The data was collected using an instrument in the different clinical evaluations of the patient. The study used sociodemographic and clinical variables, along with clinical indicators from the Nursing Outcomes Classification/NOC. Data analysis included the Generalized Estimating Equations with adjustment Bonferroni Test to compare evaluations over time. Study approved by the ethics committee 2018-0390 in Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre/Brasil.

RESULTS

Pressure injuries of 57 patients were evaluated with indicators of the nursing outcomes 'Tissue integrity: skin and mucous (1101)' and 'Wound healing: second intention (1103)' that demonstrated applicability in practice and a significant improvement in healing of injuries according to these: Erythema, Scarformation, Woundsize, Wound inflammation and Macerated skin.

CONCLUSIONS

The applicability of outcomes and indicators/NOC is evidente allowing monitoring of the healing process of the pressure injurie, which confirms that the use of NOC in clinical practice provides good precision in the evaluation of the patients studied.
