The role of the Clubhouse model in addressing health inequalities in rural Wyoming: a qualitative study.
Аннотация
OBJECTIVES
To examine health inequalities faced by individuals living with mental illness in rural Wyoming and to explore how the Clubhouse model helps address these challenges.
METHODS
This qualitative secondary analysis used semi-structured interview data from a prior study on mental health stigma in rural Wyoming. Sixteen current Clubhouse members (n = 12) and staff (n = 4 ) were recruited from the only Clubhouse in Wyoming between August and September 2024. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis in NVivo.
RESULTS
Two major themes emerged: contributors to health inequalities and the Clubhouse's efforts to address these inequalities. Contributors included limited access to mental health services and structural barriers to essential services, which negatively affected participants' mental health. Clubhouse efforts addressed multiple social determinants of health, including economic stability, health care access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context.
CONCLUSIONS
Individuals living with mental illness in rural communities experience persistent health inequalities that negatively affect their mental health. Participants described the Clubhouse model as a supportive environment that can help address these challenges and promote recovery.
