[Ophthalmogeriatric assessment : Algorithm for structuring of communication in the ophthalmological care of older visually impaired patients, the "5 questions"].
Аннотация
BACKGROUND
The ophthalmogeriatric assessment originated from the practiced synopsis of the two fields, ophthalmology and geriatrics.
OBJECTIVE
In a retrospective study the process of the evolution of the ophthalmogeriatric assessment is evaluated.
MATERIAL AND
METHODS
Based on the accessible literature, mainly on the history of both disciplines and the comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA), the ophthalmogeriatric assessment is presented and explained exemplified by age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
RESULTS
The "5 questions" of the ophthalmogeriatric assessment are defined and explained. 1. Which visual complaints are named by the patient? 2. Which diagnosis is made and how does a patient perceive her/his surroundings, concerning this diagnosis? 3. How much can the patient see (the visual function, e.g. the visual acuity and also concerning the visual field)? 4. What is the patient able to perceive visually, particularly in everyday life? 5. How can the patient be given help?
CONCLUSION
The concept of the ophthalmogeriatric assessment is a supporting tool with the aim of a structured and participative consideration of the often complex visual disabilities of visually impaired older patients, not only with respect to vision but also in synopsis with other impairments of affected patients.
