[Percutaneous coronary intervention in Burkina Faso: About the first cases performed in Ouagadougou].
Аннотация
BACKGROUND
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a relatively new technique in Burkina Faso. Our objective was to describe the indications, and outcome of the first cases performed at the Tengandogo University Hospital in Ouagadougou.
METHODS
This was a descriptive cross-sectional study involving retrospective collection of available data and prospective follow-up of patients who underwent coronary angiography in order to benefit a PCI from March 22, 2022, to August 31, 2024, in the interventional cardiology unit of the Tengandogo University Hospital.
RESULTS
Sixty-three patients, with a mean age of 58.86±10.59 years, were included in the study, showing a male predominance (83%). The main cardiovascular risk factors among patients were hypertension (92.1%), age correlated with sex (79.4%), and a sedentary lifestyle (55.6%). ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction was the primary indication (55.6%). Lesions were multivessel in 66.7% of cases. PCI by stenting was performed in 59 (93.7%) of patients. The PCI procedure was successful in 59 patients (93.7%). The in-hospital course was marked by four deaths, including one on the operating table due to critical ostial stenosis of the left main coronary artery.
CONCLUSION
Percutaneous coronary intervention is feasible in Burkina Faso despite numerous challenges. It improves the management of coronary artery disease.
