Enacting the body multiple: Wellness strategies among younger adults under biopolitical health governance and accelerated study-labour regimes.
Аннотация
Contemporary Chinese younger adults face a structural contradiction between the state-promoted biopolitics of 'Healthy China 2030' and accelerated work and study regimes. This study examines how young people enact and coordinate multiple bodily realities through everyday wellness practices and seek to maintain a workable body under these competing demands. Grounded in Annemarie Mol's theory of enactment, a reflexive thematic analysis of netnographic observations and 28 semi-structured interviews identifies four representative embodied strategies: punk wellness, modern medical wellness, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) wellness, and hybrid wellness. These strategies reflect different modes and degrees of bodily coordination, ranging from low-integration bricolage to coordination within a dominant bodily reality and, finally, reflexive meta-coordination across modern medical and TCM-derived practices. The study introduces 'reflexive fluency' to capture hybrid wellness practitioners' embodied capacity to navigate heterogeneous health repertoires and bodily realities. As a form of embodied cultural capital, this fluency reveals emerging patterns of health stratification. By shifting the focus of 'coordination' from medical institutions to individuals, the study shows how mundane bodily practices become a means of managing structural constraints. These findings contribute to debates on biopolitics, embodiment, and health stratification in post-reform China.
