BackgroundTransportation needs may differ by labor-force participation status, yet little is known about travel behavior among older adults not in the labor force.ObjectiveTo examine alternative transportation use, trip taking, and trip purposes among older adults not in the labor force.MethodsData came from the 2022 National Household Travel Survey (N = 3,474; aged ≥65; not in the labor force). Logistic regression models examined factors associated with transportation mode, taking any trip on the assigned reporting day, and trip purposes.ResultsNearly 87% drove, 5%-7% used rideshare/taxi, public transit, or bicycles, and one-third walked for transportation. Transportation use and trip-taking varied by socioeconomic characteristics, living arrangements, and digital engagement. Drivers, transportation walkers, and college graduates were more likely to travel. Social/recreational trips were more common among those living alone and among college graduates.ConclusionsImproving transportation accessibility, affordability, and digital literacy may support late-life mobility and community participation.
