Аннотация

The relationship between anatomy and public health is usually described as parallel progress in two fields. This review argues for a stronger and more specific claim: population-level interventions have historically become possible only once a disease was localized to a defined anatomical structure, and the anatomy of that structure has repeatedly determined the design of the intervention itself. We trace a four-step chain across recorded medical history: localization of a lesion to a structure, identification of the population exposed at that structure, design of an intervention around it, and measurement of the population effect. We then apply that chain to specific cases rather than general trends within ancient Egypt and Greece, the medieval Islamic era, the Renaissance, and the modern period. Within the modern period, the proposed four-step chain first closes with anatomy determining the instruments that public health applies. Where the four-step chain remains open in contemporary societies, failure is due to access and equity rather than anatomical knowledge.
