BACKGROUND: Since changes to legislation in 2012, numbers of dogs imported into the UK, especially rescues, have increased substantially. We aimed to explore the health and behaviour issues among imported dogs presented to UK veterinary surgeons.
METHODS: An online survey was completed by 413 veterinary surgeons practising in the UK in 2023. The findings were analysed with descriptive statistics.
RESULTS: Thirteen percent had encountered imported dogs who had died during or shortly after transportation and two-thirds reported observing dogs they considered were unfit to travel, including dogs with unhealed wounds and fractures. Common behavioural concerns included fear of people, noises or objects, and unwanted behaviours when confined or alone. The most common infectious diseases reported as being diagnosed were leishmaniasis, dirofilariasis and brucellosis. Suspected falsified health documentation or passports had been observed by almost two-thirds of respondents. Less than half of respondents reported specific practice policies or testing protocols for exotic diseases.
LIMITATIONS: This convenience sample is limited by what is presented to veterinary surgeons and recall over the previous 24 months.
CONCLUSION: Participants reported significant welfare concerns in current dog importation practices and highlighted a need for clearer guidance on management and treatment of imported dogs in veterinary practice.
