PURPOSE: To identify latent profiles of self-reported interoceptive awareness among patients with lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy, compare network structures between these profiles, and explore potential dimensions of self-reported interoceptive awareness for future intervention research.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted at a tertiary hospital in China from July 2025 to January 2026. Self-reported interoceptive awareness was assessed using the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA-2). Latent profile analysis, network analysis, and computer-simulated node perturbation analysis were used to identify interoceptive awareness subgroups, examine between-group network differences, and identify dimensions showing the greatest sensitivity to simulated perturbations.
RESULTS: Among 514 patients, two profiles were identified: a lower-level profile and a higher-level profile, with high classification accuracy (entropy = 0.937). Network structure differed significantly between the two profiles (p = 0.037), although global network strength did not. In the lower-level profile, Not-Worrying and Emotional Awareness showed greater centrality, with increases in Not-Worrying and decreases in Emotional Awareness yielding the greatest changes in simulation analyses. In the higher-level profile, Self-Regulation and Attention Regulation were central and also produced the largest simulated changes.
CONCLUSIONS: Two latent profiles of self-reported interoceptive awareness were identified, with distinct network structures. The most central dimensions were Not-Worrying and Emotional Awareness in the lower-level profile and Self-Regulation and Attention Regulation in the higher-level profile, with perturbation-sensitive dimensions largely overlapping with these central dimensions within each profile. These exploratory findings suggest potential profile-specific dimensions for future research, but require prospective validation.
