Detection of Salmonella Using Conventional Methods: Emphasis on the Use of Modified Semisolid Rappaport-Vassiliadis Agar (MSRV).
Аннотация
The conventional method for Salmonella detection, as recommended by ISO 6579-1:2017(E), involves four sequential steps: preenrichment, selective enrichment, plating on selective media, and confirmation. The second step consists of Selective enrichment, which is performed using Muller-Kauffmann tetrathionate-novobiocin broth, Rappaport-Vassiliadis Soya Peptone Broth, or Modified Semisolid Rappaport-Vassiliadis (MSRV) agar. MSRV agar, widely used in food industry testing, exploits Salmonella motility to facilitate selective isolation by forming characteristic opaque halos. Its use reduces processing time and laboratory costs by limiting further plating to samples showing suspect growth. This chapter describes the principles and applications of MSRV agar for effective Salmonella detection in food, feed, feces, and environmental samples, highlighting its advantages and limitations.
