"There was no way I wanted other people to see me": Application and extension of objectification theory among women with Cushing's Syndrome.
Аннотация
Cushing's Syndrome (CS) is a rare condition caused by chronic excess cortisol and associated with changes to appearance, including uncontrollable weight gain. Researchers have identified unique body dissatisfaction challenges associated with appearance-altering illness, with little research in the context of CS. This pilot research qualitatively examined body image among women with CS pre- and post-diagnosis. Data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis across seven themes related to (1) the objectifying gaze of others, (2) self-objectifying thoughts and behaviors, (3) body shame, (4) body dissatisfaction, and (5) internalized weight stigma, resulting in (6) weight control behaviors, and (7) mental health consequences. Results indicate the centrality of objectification theory's main tenets to the experience of CS for women and highlight the need for further research to better understand body image considerations for this condition.
