Аннотация

Hermann J. Muller was awarded the 1946 Nobel Prize for his 1927 discovery of X-ray-induced gene mutations in Drosophila melanogaster. This paper re-examines the 1926-1927 experimental framework of this research, demonstrating that Muller's biological model was structurally incapable of isolating single-gene transmutations. Furthermore, we examine the Mavor precedent: between 1921 and 1924 during which James Mavor published quantitative experiments in Science and Genetics demonstrating that X-rays induced transmissible chromosomal alterations. To claim priority over Mavor and secure scientific primacy, Muller established an exacting standard-demanding proof of "gene transmutation" rather than crude chromosomal damage-a standard Muller claimed to have met, but which his ClB assay fundamentally failed to deliver. We delineate the hierarchy of criticism between dose execution and experimental design. The present findings demonstrate the more foundational critique that Muller's assay model was structurally inappropriate and incapable of detecting single-gene mutations under any dose regime. The paper also explores important confounding environmental laboratory conditions during the time of the Nobel Prize research concerning how this may have had significant effects on the quality of the experimental findings and their interpretation. Finally, we explore the epistemological paradox of how this century-long misinterpretation persisted into the molecular era, evaluating Muller's revised standing as a brilliant methodological engineer who constructed an unyielding paradigm that shaped regulatory toxicology for generations.
