Effectiveness of Abstract Semantic Associative Network Training (AbSANT) in improving lexical retrieval in Mandarin-speaking aphasia: A multiple-baseline single-case study.

PURPOSE: Semantic Associative Network Training (AbSANT) is evidence-based in alphabetic languages, but its applicability to Mandarin-speaking individuals with aphasia remains unclear. Since Mandarin compound words often share morphemes across abstract and concrete concepts, the morphological structure of Mandarin may uniquely enhance semantic generalisation.

METHOD: Using a multiple-baseline single-case design, we evaluated treatment outcomes via effect sizes for two participants with anomic aphasia) and Wernicke's aphasia.

RESULT: Both participants significantly improved in retrieving abstract words (encompassing both treated and untreated items) and demonstrated generalisation to untreated concrete words exposed only during initial category sorting. Notably, despite more severe aphasia, Participant 2 achieved greater treatment effects, highlighting the potential role of age and social engagement beyond aphasia severity.

CONCLUSION

These preliminary findings suggest that AbSANT may support lexical retrieval and semantic generalisation in Mandarin-speaking individuals with aphasia. Further single-case and longitudinal studies are needed to better understand treatment mechanisms and individual variability in treatment response.
