Аннотация

Scorpion stings are medical emergencies that require immediate attention and are frequently overlooked. Commercial antivenom available only in India is for a single species of venomous scorpion, with significant limitations. Additionally, access to antivenom therapy is limited in rural areas. Examining the ancient Indian traditional medicine, Ayurveda, reveals insights into the underlying mechanisms of scorpion envenomation and potential treatments. Thus, this study examines the Ayurvedic treatment of scorpion stings from a historical and traditional viewpoint and a modern scientific standpoint, noting its shortcomings and recommending topics for further investigation. This study used a narrative integrative review approach. Relevant literature was searched in Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus using the terms 'Ayurveda,' 'Traditional Indian medicine', 'scorpion sting treatment', and 'Vrishchika Damsha'. Classical Ayurvedic texts, ethnomedicinal reports, preclinical studies, and selected clinical accounts were reviewed and summarized to relate traditional Ayurvedic concepts to current knowledge on scorpion envenomation. However, Ayurvedic knowledge of 'Vrishchika Damsha' (scorpion sting) focused only on the history and Ayurvedic perspective on scorpions, as well as on approaches to treating scorpion envenomation in India. The study showed that Agada Tantra, a specialized branch of Ayurvedic Toxicology, focuses on understanding and treating various toxins, including those produced by scorpions (Vrishchika). Ayurvedic texts provide detailed descriptions of scorpion sting symptoms and categorize the venom type as Manda visha (mild), Madhya visha (moderate), and Ugra visha (highly venomous) based on its toxicity. Ayurvedic classics such as Susihruta Samhita, Agnivesha Samhita, and Charak Samhita outline various treatment approaches for Vrishchika Damsha, including ointments, tablets, fumigation techniques, sudation therapy, chants, and herbal solvents. Significant gaps in knowledge regarding the effectiveness, safety, and standardization of Ayurvedic treatments remain, so a more in-depth investigation is needed to examine its potential for treating scorpion stings and assess its limitations through a modern scientific lens. This study will help identify knowledge gaps, ensuring a more evidence-based integration of traditional and contemporary healthcare methods.
