Supplementary Use of an Intraoral Scanner in an Older Patient With Microstomia After Maxillary Cancer Resection.
Аннотация
OBJECTIVE
To describe how digital technologies can compensate for potential errors during impression procedures in an older patient following maxillary cancer resection.
BACKGROUND
Maxillary defects after oncologic resection in older adults cause functional and aesthetic impairment. Rehabilitation must consider anatomical alterations, systemic conditions, and patient-related constraints that may limit surgical or implant-based options. Intraoral scanning may serve as a supplementary tool to improve the accuracy of intraoral records in such cases.
MATERIALS AND
METHODS
A 72-year-old female patient with adenoid-cystic carcinoma of the maxilla underwent left hemimaxillectomy and microvascular reconstruction. She presented with impaired mastication and microstomia. Following clinical assessment, a maxillary removable partial denture was planned and fabricated using a combined conventional-digital workflow adapted to anatomical and functional limitations.
RESULT: The prosthesis provided satisfactory retention, stability, and function, improving mastication and aesthetics. No biological or mechanical complications were observed during follow-up.
CONCLUSION
Intraoral scanning can serve as a useful supplementary tool to verify and correct discrepancies in conventional impressions, particularly in older patients with anatomical and functional limitations following maxillary cancer resection.
