PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the 1-minute sit-to-stand test (1-STST) in evaluating functional exercise capacity both at admission and discharge.

METHODS: A total of 40 burn patients (18 females; 22 males) were included in this study. The ages of the burn patients range from 24 to 49. Functional exercise capacity in burn patients was evaluated using the 1-STST and the 6-minute walk test (6-MWT), both at admission and discharge. All patients performed the 1-STST and retest, and the 6-MWT on the same day, with a 30-minute rest break between each test. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman plots were used to assess reliability. The construct validity of the 1-STST was analyzed using correlations with the 6MWT and TBSA.

RESULTS: The mean total burn surface area burned (TBSA) of burn patients was 18%. When the causes of injury were examined, 17% of the patients had thermal burns, 14% had electrical burns, and 9% had flame burns. The 1-STST showed excellent test-retest reliability at admission and discharge (ICC=0.972 and 0.946, respectively; p < 0.001). The 1-STST was significantly correlated with the 6-MWT both at admission and discharge (r = 0.842; r = 0.813, respectively, p < 0.001). The 1-STST was negatively correlated with TBSA (r = -0.568; r = -0.653, respectively; p < 0.001). Physiological responses to the 1-STST and the 6-MWT were similar both at admission and discharge (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION: The 1-STST is a valid and reliable tool for assessing functional exercise capacity in patients with burn injury for post-acute recovery. 1-STST can be a potential alternative tool over 6-MWT in situations where space and time are limited.
