Аннотация
The cuticle and peritrophic membrane are important physical barriers against pathogens in shrimp. However, exposed structures, such as tegumental glands (TGs), can act as entry points for the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). Previous studies have detected viral signals in TGs, although it remains unclear whether the virus is retained in the mucus or infects glandular cells. In this study, in situ hybridization for viral RNA in TG cells indicated the presence of viral transcripts, suggesting that TGs could function as sites of viral infection and subsequent tissue dissemination. Furthermore, β-glucans showed a local protective effect, indicating potential activation of immune mechanisms.
