Bringing it home: Couple health behavior discordance and the physiological returns to social participation in China.

OBJECTIVE: Social participation is assumed to benefit whoever engages in it. We ask whether that benefit survives a marriage in which spouses keep different health behaviors.
BACKGROUND: The health implications of social participation outside the household may depend on circumstances within the marriage. Dyadic and stress perspectives suggest that behavioral differences between spouses may shape its associations with physiological health.
METHOD: Using data from the 2011 and 2015 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (N = 1705 couples), we estimated Actor-Partner Interdependence Models linking formal and informal social participation to subsequent allostatic load. Models included lifestyle and substance-use discordance, their interactions with social participation, and couple means and differences for each behavior.
RESULTS: Both lifestyle and substance-use discordance weakened the association between wives' formal participation and lower AL. Wives' informal participation was associated with higher AL at low lifestyle discordance, but this association weakened as discordance increased. For partner associations, husbands' formal participation was associated with lower AL in wives at high discordance. No interactions predicting husbands' AL were statistically significant.
IMPLICATIONS: The findings support a dyadic perspective on social engagement. Programs that promote community engagement for older adults reach wives whose households already run smoothly, and largely miss those whose households do not. Behavioral alignment between spouses is a precondition for those programs to work, not a separate health target.
