[Trazodone beyond approved indications: consumption trends in Brazilian states and the Federal District, 2014-2021].

Ecological study aimed to determine the consumption of low-dose trazodone (unlicensed/off label) in the Brazilian macro-regions, states, and the Federal District, to monitor the trend between the years 2014 and 2021, and to evaluate the relationship with health indicators. Data collection on the dispensation of manipulated trazodone was carried out through the National System for the Management of Controlled Products, considering low-dose prescriptions from 0.001 to 49.999mg. The calculation of consumption used the population estimates of the IBGE. The observed trends were classified as increasing, stable or decreasing, with a confidence interval of 95% and a significance level of 5%. The results showed higher consumption coefficients in the region: Southeast, Northeast, North, South and Midwest and a positive relationship between the number of physicians and magistral pharmacies with the consumption of off-label trazodone. Was increasing consumption in four states, stationary consumption in 23 and absence of decreasing coefficients. Despite limited evidence regarding the off-label consumption of trazodone, a sharp increase was observed in 2021 in all Brazilian macro-regions, with higher consumption in the Southeast and a positive relationship with the number of doctors and magistral pharmacies.
