Аннотация

Background

Chronic diseases may generate behavioral responses extending beyond the affected individual. Although family health effects and behavioral spillovers have been examined in health economics and behavioral research, their relevance to dermatological disease management has received limited conceptual attention.

Objective

To develop a conceptual framework distinguishing individual behavioral adaptation from household behavioral spillovers and identifying the conditions under which disease management behaviors may extend beyond the patient.

Methods

This conceptual study integrates theoretical and empirical literature from health economics, behavioral science, family health research, and dermatology. Four dermatological conditions-photosensitivity disorders, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and acne-are used as purposively selected illustrations of contrasting behavioral mechanisms. A coordination-game model is additionally developed to formalize one mechanism of interdependent patient-household behavioral adaptation.

Results

The framework proposes two analytically distinct but interrelated processes. Individual behavioral adaptation is hypothesized to depend on trigger clarity, behavioral controllability, and feedback immediacy, whereas the translation of disease management behavior into household spillovers additionally depends on behavioral visibility, environmental sharedness, and household relevance. Patient and household adaptation may be reciprocal, particularly in caregiver-mediated disease management. The coordination game demonstrates how strategic complementarity can generate both coordinated-adoption and non-adoption equilibria when the benefits of behavioral adaptation depend on compatible household behavior. Behavioral spillovers are treated as directionally neutral and may generate positive, negative, mixed, or null health and welfare consequences.

Conclusions

The proposed framework provides testable propositions for future longitudinal, dyadic, and household-level research on disease-related behavioral adaptation. More broadly, although dermatological diseases provide the illustrative setting, the framework may be applicable to other chronic diseases in which management affects household behavior; incorporating effects on patients and their close social environment may improve resource allocation and provide a more complete basis for evaluating aggregate welfare.
