An understanding of history allows nurses to comprehend how they have shaped the community to which they belong. The profession's trajectory throughout the 20th century illustrates the gradual establishment of a strong professional identity, one that has gained lasting recognition among the general public. This evolution was underpinned by an increasingly autonomous approach to knowledge, despite various and sometimes significant obstacles, culminating in the emergence and recognition of nursing as an academic discipline in the second decade of the 21st century.
