OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the impact of anxiety levels on maternal parenting and breastfeeding self-efficacy among women with late preterm labor.
STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2023 and March 2024 at a state hospital in southern Türkiye, involving 217 women who met the inclusion criteria. The data were collected using a demographic form, State Anxiety Scale, Perceived Maternal Parenting Self-Efficacy tool, and Modified Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form for mothers of preterm infants. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics such as number, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, as well as independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, correlation, and regression analysis.
RESULTS: The mothers' Modified Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF) score showed a weak positive correlation with the Perceived Maternal Parenting Self-Efficacy Tool score, but a moderate negative association with their State Anxiety Scale score. A significant negative weak correlation was observed between the Perceived Maternal Parenting Self-Efficacy Tool and State Anxiety Scale scores (p<0.05). The regression analysis revealed that exclusive breastfeeding, having an income equal to or greater than expenses, and breastfeeding the baby within the first 30 minutes after birth (β=0.128) were associated with higher breastfeeding self-efficacy. Conversely, the State Anxiety Scale total score was associated with lower breastfeeding self-efficacy. Additionally, being multiparous and having a history of late preterm birth in a previous pregnancy were significantly associated with higher maternal parenting self-efficacy. In contrast, the mean State Anxiety Scale total score was negatively correlated with the Perceived Maternal Parenting Self-Efficacy Tool score.
