INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is supported by a high level of evidence. More recently, the indications for PR have expanded and new models of care have emerged.
STATE OF ART: This position statement summarizes recent evidence on PR regarding: 1) its objectives; 2) the key outcomes to be assessed at baseline, during, and at the end of the program, along with the recommended assessment tools; 3) its integration within the care pathway; 4) modalities of implementation, including home-based programs, telerehabilitation, and hybrid formats; 5) its core components, based on therapeutic education (including psychosocial and motivational support), exercise training, and adapted physical activity; and 6) the strategies and professionals involved in maintaining long-term benefits.
PERSPECTIVES: The extension of PR indications to other respiratory conditions (interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hypertension, thoracic oncology) and the development of new delivery models are expected to facilitate PR access.
CONCLUSION: This position statement from French-speaking experts aims to support greater recognition of PR and to promote its integration into patient care pathways.
