OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the characteristics, reliability, and quality of YouTube exercise videos designed for people with lung cancer.

METHODS: Video characteristics (e.g., likes, views, video length, and upload source) were recorded. Information reliability was assessed using the mDISCERN scale, and overall quality was evaluated using the Global Quality Scale (GQS) and the JAMA benchmark criteria. Exercise-specific quality was additionally rated on a Likert scale focusing on exercise safety, progression/adaptability, and demonstration/instructions. Two physiotherapists independently analyzed the videos. Of 2,158 videos screened, 24 met the final eligibility criteria and were included in the analysis.

RESULTS: According to the GQS, 54.2% (n = 13) of the videos were classified as high quality and 20.8% (n = 5) as low quality. GQS scores were positively correlated with mDISCERN and JAMA scores, and mDISCERN scores were also positively correlated with JAMA scores (all p < 0.05). Exercise-quality parameters were not correlated with daily video views or likes (p > 0.05). Inter-rater agreement was high (Cohen's kappa: mDISCERN = 0.77, GQS = 0.72, JAMA = 0.68).

CONCLUSIONS: YouTube exercise videos for people with lung cancer show variable reliability and exercise-specific quality, with particular limitations in exercise demonstrations and instructions despite a substantial proportion being rated as high quality on the GQS.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS: YouTube provides readily accessible exercise information for lung cancer survivors; however, the reliability and quality of available videos vary, underscoring the need for guidance toward evidence-based resources.
