Routine Mass Detection and Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry in Analytical Workflows.
Аннотация
Mass spectrometry (MS) has long occupied a paradoxical space in pharmaceutical laboratories. Its value is undeniable; nothing confirms identity or reveals hidden impurities quite like MS. Yet for decades, the instruments capable of such insights were complex, specialized, and typically reserved for expert users in dedicated analytical suites. As a result, many QC and development labs relied almost exclusively on UV detection, even when mass confirmation would have greatly strengthened data quality. The emergence of compact single-quadrupole mass detectors has reshaped this landscape. Instruments like the Waters ACQUITY QDa II Mass Detector and the SQ Detector 2 introduce mass detection directly into LC workflows without demanding the infrastructure, training, or maintenance associated with traditional mass spectrometers. Triple or tandem quadrupole (TQ) mass spectrometry remains the gold standard for targeted quantitation experiments, with this especially being true for food and environmental applications. This chapter explores how these detectors have become practical tools in pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical testing, with a particular emphasis on GLP-1 peptides, synthetic oligonucleotides, and everyday QC applications. This chapter also explores why TQ remains the go-to system for detecting, quantifying, and, importantly, confirming contaminants, such as PFAS, pesticides, vet drugs, and mycotoxins in complex matrix extracts.
