Migrant Parent-Child Dyads Perceive the National School Lunch Program as Enjoyable and Beneficial, but Difficult to Navigate Culturally.
Аннотация
OBJECTIVE
To evaluate refugee and immigrant parent-child dyads perceptions of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) using mixed methods.
METHODS
Researchers interviewed 11 refugee or immigrant children regarding food acculturation and the NSLP, including a drawing portion. Researchers surveyed parents' perceptions of the NSLP. Thematic analysis and SPSS software were used for analysis.
RESULTS
Children's NSLP drawings depicted pizza, milk, burgers, and fruit. Some children preferred NSLP lunch, whereas others preferred their home country school lunch. Half of the parents preferred NSLP lunch for their children. Children noted the challenge of integrating their health beliefs, languages, or religious food practices within the NSLP. Parents disagreed that the NSLP offers cultural foods but agreed that it follows nutritional guidelines.
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: These children enjoyed NSLP meals but could benefit from more international menu options and locally appropriate policies to make the transition smoother. Further research can identify the extent of these concerns and effective solutions.
